Problems seeing images
|
Although the majority of people have no problems seeing this site, a few have reported problems. The site has been set up to prevent leeching and thus prevent people from stealing my bandwidth. Unfortunately this conflicts with visitors' firewall configurations. Apparently Norton, and a few other firewalls, can be set to block access to the referrer information. If the referrer information is not present, access to the images will be denied. Most firewall software will have an option to allow referrer information only for specific sites defined by the user. Adding www.carolinehardy.co.uk as a permitted site should, in most cases, solve the problem. Norton and Zone Alarm can be dealt with by specific procedures:
Changing Norton firewall settings 1) Go to Norton Firewall Configuration main screen. 2) Double-click Privacy Control. 3) Click on Advanced. 4) Scroll down under web contents options until you get to http://www.carolinehardy.co.uk. Click it once to select it. 5) Under Information About Visited Sites, uncheck the default, and set it to Permit. 6) Click OK on that screen, then click OK on the Advanced screen. Alternatively: 1) Go to Norton Firewall Configuration main screen. 2) Click on the Options menu at the top of the screen, then choose Internet Security. 3) Click on the tab marked Web Content Tab. 4) Under Global Settings, find the box labelled Information about visited sites. 5) Click the Permit radio button. 6) Click the OK button to save the changes. Changing Zone Alarm firewall settings 1) Open Zone Alarm by right clicking on the icon in the task tray. 2) Click Privacy. 3) Under Cookie control, select Custom. 4) In the Custom Privacy Options window, choose the Cookies tab. 5) Unclick Remove Private Header Information. Zone Alarm also blocks images if you have settings on High. The problem can be fixed by setting the firewall to the defaults setting of Medium. Other firewall software can be configured in a similar manner. If you use another firewall besides Norton or Zone Alarm and cannot view my images, please consult the manual or website for your specific firewall to allow referrers. The firewall bundled with Internet Explorer apparently does not cause these problems. Web filters such as Proxomitron can be configured to block referrer information. Bypass the filter for this site. It should be noted that, by default, Norton Internet Security, blocks all ads and banners on all websites. If this default setting is left on, it may interfere with the correct display of my site. If you do have problems, try turning this setting off. Similarly Proxomitron and other web filters will also block banners. If you have problems, bypass the relevant filter for this site. If you have come here from another page, or from a search engine, and cannot see the menu on the left, click here. |
